Abalone Recovered – Gordons Bay, Western Cape, South Africa

On Saturday, 5 October 2019, at 11:00 Marine Anti-Poaching Unit (MAPU) received a call from public regarding a bag found at Bikini Beach at Gordons Bay.

With support from a MAPU volunteer the member of public confirmed that the content of the bag was abalone.

The bag was found hidden in a bush and we assume that a poacher left it there to collect at a later time.

MAPU made contact with CCT Marine Unit who sent a vehicle to the scene and the abalone was booked in with SAPS Gordons Bay.

SAPS confirmed that a total of 47 shucked abalone was found in the bag.

Thanks to the public, CCT Marine Unit and SAPS the abalone will not hit the black market.
